One Wild Month: My Journey through #30DaysWild

June was a wild ride! Literally. As part of the Wildlife Trusts’ #30DaysWild campaign, I decided to dedicate the whole month to immersing myself in the enchanting realm of nature and basking in its raw, wild beauty. From reconnecting with my love for nature’s splendid creatures to exploring new terrains and cultivating fresh connections with the environment, this journey was an exhilarating kaleidoscope of memorable experiences and enriching discoveries. Now, let’s take a journey down memory lane and revisit the wildly enriching month of June.

The adventure began on Day 1 at RSPB Bempton Cliffs in East Riding, where the kids and I spent the day watching Puffins, Razorbills, Guillemots, and Gannets. The captivating display of these birds in their natural habitat was an enthralling sight that marked a phenomenal start to my journey.

By Day 11, the wild quest had evolved into a vertical adventure, leading me to scramble across the rocky labyrinth of Crowden Clough. Dipping into crystal-clear pools and navigating the exhilarating boulder fields was a humbling reminder that sometimes, the wilderness demands we get our hands a bit dirty!

But not all days were about adrenaline and exertion. The peaceful and quaint village of Edale, the historic St. Mary’s Church in Cromford, and the family orienteering course at the National Trust’s Calke House and Gardens offered unique opportunities for tranquillity, historical exploration, and family bonding. The harmonious blend of cultural richness and natural beauty in these spots was nothing short of enchanting.

From exploring the picturesque trails of High Peak and Tissington to trying standup paddleboarding at Carsington Water and jogging down the Grand Union Canal, each day of the challenge introduced a new way to connect with nature. Even on days when I was close to home, I found beauty in my backyard – a gentle reminder that grand adventures aren’t always necessary to appreciate the environment. The chirping birds, rustling leaves, and soft warmth of the sun provided the perfect companionship for a quiet afternoon with a good book and a cup of tea.

As the journey transitioned from land to water, my first-time paddleboarding experience on the serene Carsington Water was thrilling, while a peaceful canoe ride with my daughter on Father’s Day allowed for much-needed reflection and relaxation. These water adventures emphasized the essential role our water bodies play, not just in supporting diverse wildlife, but also in providing recreational opportunities for us.

Among the most memorable moments was the exhilarating #BigWildWeekend. Camping under the star-studded sky during a spectacular thunderstorm with my daughter was a bonding experience like no other. Each thunderclap resonated with the heartbeat of the wild, and every flash of lightning unveiled the untouched beauty of the wilderness. These intimate moments with nature served to strengthen our resolve to protect and cherish our environment.

Through every high and low, this journey has reaffirmed my belief in the profound impact of nature on our wellbeing and the necessity to protect it. #30DaysWild not only rekindled my connection with nature but also sparked a deeper appreciation for its wild beauty and biodiversity.

As the month concluded, I found myself imbued with a refreshed sense of gratitude and inspiration from the wild. The diverse landscapes, wildlife encounters, and the intimate moments of peace have left a lasting impact. Although the #30DaysWild challenge has come to an end, the wild journey continues. Here’s to staying wild and cherishing the magic that nature has to offer!
