Immersed in the allure of Cornwall’s breathtaking coastline, we decided to pick up on last years adventure fast packing trip bivvying for three nights between Penzance and Falmouth with a more relaxed nine day trip along the South West Coast Path. This time determined to explore the region’s beauty from Padstow to Penzance. Intrigued by… Continue reading Exploring Cornwall’s Coastline: A Multi-Day Hike from Padstow to Penzance
Category: Fastpacking
Fastpacking is a marriage of trail running and ultralight backpacking: “hiking the ups, jogging the flats, and running the downs,” depending on the gradient, because of the weight carried. Participants carry a light pack with essential supplies, including a sleeping bag and tent, or similar form of shelter, if mountain huts or other accommodation is not available.
Fastpacking and bivvying along the South West Coast Path, Penzance to Falmouth
So with the long weekend for the Queen’s jubilee approaching it was time to plan a memorable trip like I did for William and Kate’s wedding when I visited the Shetlands making the most of the extra bank holidays. Maps were perused and plans started to form for a fast packing trip. Where should we… Continue reading Fastpacking and bivvying along the South West Coast Path, Penzance to Falmouth
What do I use as my bivvy set up
Bivvying is one of my favorite ways to connect with nature. Unlike tents, bivvys provide a simple sleeping place where you can lie down and watch the stars while feeling the rain and wind on your face. Of course, when the rain becomes too much, you can always pull the fabric over to protect yourself.… Continue reading What do I use as my bivvy set up
Fastpacking Weavers Way in Norfolk from Great Yarmouth to Cromer
I found this walk split into three distinct parts with different landscapes throughout these. Starting by the water and heading through the broads, then along the ‘Muddle and Get Nowhere’ discussed railway line before heading through the landscape of old estates and villages. Colin Elliott’s book Long Distance Trails introduces this walk as follows: ‘Though… Continue reading Fastpacking Weavers Way in Norfolk from Great Yarmouth to Cromer
Fastpacking around Norfolk, the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coastal Path
The aim was to travel light, move quickly and have some long days on foot in Norfolk. This would be a chance to revisit some of the places from my childhood memories; including walking sections of the coastline along the mashes and birdwatching with my grandfather along with digging in the sand at with my… Continue reading Fastpacking around Norfolk, the Peddars Way and Norfolk Coastal Path
Bank holiday weekend Fastpacking the Sentier du Nord in Luxembourg
This was an amazing trip to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. The plan was simple, as I had been working in Brussels rather than go home for the August Bank Holiday, to head into Ardennes and do a multi-day long distance path. As much as the path was marked on the ground with diamonds I… Continue reading Bank holiday weekend Fastpacking the Sentier du Nord in Luxembourg
Fastpacking the Northumberland Coast Path over a long weekend
After booking our accommodation and after packing our small running rucksacks night before our alarm went off and it was time to head down to the train station to get the train first to Newcastle and then on to Almouth. This was our first attempt at fast packing between accommodation and we had decided to… Continue reading Fastpacking the Northumberland Coast Path over a long weekend
Fastpacking the Kepler Trail in New Zealand
Evolution to fast packing on my New Zealand trip in 2007This was one of my favourite routes in New Zealand. It was the route where I consolidated the approach I had first tried a few days earlier on a two day trip around the Caples and Greenstone trails. Prior to this I had done a… Continue reading Fastpacking the Kepler Trail in New Zealand
Packing and travelling light, the kit list I still use
‘Where is started for me’ As I was preparing my presentation for a work conference in the USA and then putting my thoughts to what I needed to pack for my trip a work colleague suggested that as I was changing flights, just taking hand luggage would improve my chances of all my luggage arriving… Continue reading Packing and travelling light, the kit list I still use
