Challenging myself with microadventures: June – From Work to Underneath the Stars, Finding Serenity in Peak District National Park

A Journey of Two Wheels: A Work-Away Day Turned Bivvy Trip in the Peak District

As the first streaks of sunlight streamed through my window, I leapt out of bed, fueled by eager anticipation. The stars of the day’s journey were my reliable road bike and bivvy kit, two indispensable companions for an adventure that was to harmoniously blend work and play, office camaraderie, and a night under the open sky. Our destination: Hathersage and a night in the East Moors Partnership area of the Peak District National Park – a spot renowned for its breathtaking landscapes and tranquil atmosphere.

With tranquil roads bathed in the warm glow of the summer sun awaiting me, I embarked on my journey. My heart pounded with a blend of excitement and anticipation. The prospect of conquering new hills, the thrilling rush of downhills, and the chance to connect with colleagues in this idyllic setting filled me with energy. Our workspace for the day was a cosy pub in Hathersage, brimming with the promise of team-building activities.

Pedalling along the route, crossing into the Eastern Moors, the awe-inspiring Curbar Gap unfolded before me, a panoramic view of the Peak District’s unspoiled beauty. Descending to Froggatt Village, a smile played on my lips as I spotted a Duke of Edinburgh group leisurely following the river path, surely savouring their own adventure on this glorious morning.

The pub hummed with activity, featuring an exciting mix of laser clay pigeon shooting, archery, and even a blindfolded maze. A session of chariot building wrapped up the day, a fun spin on teamwork that had everyone laughing and bonding in equal measure. I had the chance to chat with colleagues from both our offices, some I hadn’t had the opportunity to interact with before, creating stronger ties within our team.

As my last colleague bid their farewell, the twilight sky guided me towards Surprise View, a spot renowned for its awe-inspiring vistas. With the sun slowly sinking behind the horizon, I found a secluded spot to set up my bivvy for the night, nestling under the blanket of the star-studded sky.

Morning arrived all too soon, bringing with it an army of midges. Unfazed, I packed up swiftly, and found a tantalising bit of single track to give my morning a thrilling start. Back on the road, the ride was mostly downhill, a gratifying reward for the previous day’s exertions.

Home welcomed me warmly, but work was close at its heels. As I settled into my work-from-home routine, I reflected on my adventure. A unique blend of work and leisure, a team-building exercise that transformed into a personal journey of exploration and adventure. Already, I found myself yearning for the next one, eagerly waiting to see where my road bike and bivvy kit would lead me next.

I have spent most of the last decade out on adventures with my kids, ranging from introducing them to wild camping and cycle camping to a 14 day trek along Langtang and Helembu treks as part of a longer trip to Nepal as a family. Along with a number of personal trips. My blog covers some of the highlights
